Robert Ader, Ph.D., M.D.

Dr. Robert Ader is the George L. Engel Professor of Psychosocial Medicine, Director of the Division of Behavioral and Psychosocial Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry, and Director of the interdepartmental Center for Psychoneuroimmunology Research at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Dr. Ader received his B.S. degree from Tulane University and his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from Cornell University in 1957. He joined the University of Rochester faculty in 1957 as an instructor and became a Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology in 1968. He holds a secondary appointment as Professor of Medicine. For the past 45 years, Dr. Ader has had virtually uninterrupted research and/or research training grant support from the NIH and from private foundations. From 1969 to 1999, he held a continuing Research Scientist Award from the National Institute of Mental Health. In 1992, Dr. Ader received an honorary medical degree from the University of Trondheim in Norway and an honorary D.Sc. degree from Tulane University in 2002. During 1970-71, he was a Visiting Professor at the Rudolf Magnus Institute for Pharmacology in Utrecht, The Netherlands. During the 1992-93 academic year, he was a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences Department at Stanford University.

The author of more than 225 scientific publications, Dr. Ader edited Psychoneuroimmunology (1981), referred to as "the signature volume of a new field of research," and is senior editor of the second and third editions (1991 and 2001). He serves and has served on several editorial boards and is Editor-in-Chief of Brain, Behavior and Immunity, the first scientific journal in this interdisciplinary field. Dr. Ader is a past President of the American Psychosomatic Society, the International Society for Developmental Psychobiology, the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research, and was Founding President of the Psychoneuroimmunology Research Society.
