Biological Mechanisms of Psychosocial Effects on Disease First State-of-the-Science Meeting

Speaker Bios

Shamgar Ben-Eliyahu, Ph.D.

Dr. Shamgar Ben-Eliyahu is a neuroscientist specializing in Psycho-Neuro-Endocrine-Immunology (PNI). Within the realm of PNI, Dr. Ben-Eliyahu's current research interests include the impacts of surgery and stress (and the bioactive substances associated with them) on cell-mediated immunity (specifically NK cells) and on resistance to tumor metastasis. Dr. Ben-Eliyahu also is studying: (a) the impact of the menstrual cycle and sex hormones on stress responses, immunity, and tumor development; (b) cellular immunity in schizophrenic patients; (c) the impact of maternal immune and stress responses on offspring's neurodevelopment; and (d) the role of stress and NK cells in the etiology of recurrent miscarriage. The doctor's studies are conducted using animal models, human subjects and patients, and aim at understanding underlying mechanisms in view of clinical implications. Among future research plans are clinical studies of prophylactic measures against the immunosuppressive and metastasis-promoting effects of surgery in cancer patients. These studies will be based, among other things, on findings from ongoing animal research. Support for conducting these studies is provided by the NCI, National Institutes of Health (NIH) (RO1 CA73056, 1996-2006), Israeli Science Foundation (2000-2004), Israel Ministry of Health, and other sources.

Dr. Ben-Eliyahu received his B.A. and M.A. degrees, cum laude, from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. He was a Distinguished Postdoctoral Trainee in Psychoneuroimmunology at the PNI Research Society and was awarded an Allon Fellowship from the Israel Academia Planning and Finance (for recruiting Israeli scientists from abroad.) Dr. Ben Eliyahu received the Young Investigator Award from The Fund for Psychoneuroimmunology. He has published peer-reviewed journal papers in Anesthesiology, Brain Research, the British Journal of Cancer, Developmental and Comparative Immunology, the International Journal of Cancer, the Journal of Immunology, Nature Medicine, Pain, and a chapter in the book Psychoneuroimmunology (3rd Edition). Dr. Ben-Eliyahu is recruiting grant money from NCI/NIH (RO1), and from the Israeli Science Foundation. He is in demand as a speaker, and his presentations have included The Psychoneuroimmunological Aspects of Health and Disease Meeting, NIH, Bethesda, Maryland, USA (1994); the 3rd International Symposium "Psychoneuroimmunology," Leipzig, Germany (1996); the 10th International Conference on Cancer Nursing, Jerusalem, Israel (1998); and the Biological Mechanisms of Psychosocial Effects on Disease, NCI/NIH, Bethesda, Maryland, USA (2002). Dr. Ben-Eliyahu also instructs and trains M.A., Ph.D., and postdoctoral fellows (M.D. and Ph.D.) in basic and clinical research.
