Biological Mechanisms of Psychosocial Effects on Disease First State-of-the-Science Meeting

Speaker Bios

Keith W. Kelley, Ph.D.

Dr. Keith W. Kelley is a leading scientist in the field of neuroimmune interactions. For the past 25 years, he has been at the forefront of defining reciprocal systems of communication between the immune and central nervous systems (CNS). His career research contributions have greatly impacted all the major fields in psychoneuroimmunology, including some of the first studies on the effects of stress on delayed-type hypersensitivity immune reactions, the restoration of immune functions in aged subjects by growth hormone, the influence of hormones on hematopoiesis and susceptibility to infectious disease, and the role of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines as communication molecules between the immune system and CNS. Recently, Dr. Kelley discovered and defined intracellular crosstalk that occurs between receptors for cytokines (TNFa) and hormones (IGF-I) on promyeloid cells, neurons, skeletal muscle, and cancer cells. The major health impact of Dr. Kelley's research is directed at mental health, aging, stroke, muscle wasting in AIDS, and cancer. He has been awarded 32 years of funding as a Principal Investigator on various R01 National Institutes of Health grants. His pioneering research has created new horizons in the fields of immunology, endocrinology, and neuroscience.

Dr. Kelley earned his B.S. degree with honors in agriculture from Illinois State University and was awarded M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Environmental Physiology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. After being promoted to Associate Professor at Washington State University, he returned in 1984 to the University of Illinois as a Professor of Immunophysiology in the Department of Animal Sciences. During his sabbaticals, Dr. Kelley has been a Visiting Professor of Immunology at esteemed institutes in France, including the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Medicale (INSERM). Dr. Kelley has published 177 peer-reviewed papers, 53 book chapters, and has been an invited speaker at more than 250 international and national scientific meetings. He has received numerous university and national awards, been appointed to editorial boards of a number of peer-reviewed, scientific journals, and served on three dozen study sections for the NIH. Dr. Kelley was elected as Secretary/Treasurer of the PsychoNeuroImmunology Research Society in 1994, and he served as the President of that organization in 1999.
