Introduction to Science of Team Science (SciTS) Team

Over the past few decades, there has been growing interest and investment in large-scale, team-based research initiatives designed to address complex scientific and societal problems. In response to this trend, a new interdisciplinary field called the Science of Team Science (SciTS) Exit Disclaimer has emerged, which aims to better understand the circumstances that facilitate or hinder effective team-based research and practice and identify the unique outcomes of these approaches for productivity, innovation, and translation.

The SciTS field initially grew out of practical concerns on the part of funding agencies, which needed to gauge the performance of team science collaborations, understand its value add over more traditional scientific approaches, and inform science policy. It has since expanded to address the needs of institutions and investigators interested in developing effective practices to support and engage in team science activities.

The Behavioral Research Program (BRP), part of the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) at NCI has established several cross-disciplinary center grant initiatives over the past decade with the goal of accelerating scientific progress related to cancer prevention and treatment. In line with this mission, the SciTS Team was formed in 1999 (with the original name, Evaluation of Large Initiatives (ELI) team), with its primary charge to better understand the processes, outcomes, and impacts of these large cross-disciplinary initiatives. Initially housed within the Office of the Associate Director (OAD), the SciTS Team is now part of the Science of Research and Technology Branch (SRTB) in BRP.

Goals of the SciTS Team

The mission of the SciTS team is to advance our understanding of effective team science approaches, including cross-disciplinary team approaches, by implementing and stimulating original SciTS research and supporting the translation of emerging knowledge into best practices to enhance the conduct, support, and evaluation of team science. The team aims to achieve this mission by conducting research and providing support and leadership in three key areas. Team goals and objectives include:

Goal: Studying Team Science

  • Objectives:
    To use innovative multi-method approaches to study the processes and outcomes of cross-disciplinary team science initiatives

    To develop and apply new methods, metrics, definitions, models, and approaches for evaluating cross-disciplinary team science initiatives

Goal: Facilitating Team Science Collaborations

  • Objectives:
    To support effective team science initiatives and training in team science through the development of:
    • Practical tools and resources
    • Funding opportunities

Goal: Supporting the Development of the SciTS Field

  • Objective:
    To support the development and evolution of the SciTS field by supporting platforms for knowledge sharing and information exchange, including conferences, journal special issues devoted to team science, and web-based technologies for knowledge sharing and information exchange on team science

Staff

The SciTS Team is housed within the Science of Research and Technology Branch (SRTB) and is comprised of government employees, contractors, academic consultants, and post-doctoral fellows. The SciTS Team members are trained in a variety of disciplines, including public health, psychology (social-ecological, neuropsychology, and clinical), education, statistics, organization and management, program evaluation, and informatics.
