Effect of Oxidant Load on HPV persistence and CIN (SIL)

The overall goal of this study is to determine the association between serum biomarkers of oxidant load and cervical carcinogenesis among women from the Ludwig-McGill Cohort Study. The Ludgwig-McGill Cohort Study is a large prospective study which collected multiple measurements of relevant risk factors (e.g., smoking, presence of cervical inflammatory cells, dietary and circulatory concentrations of antioxidant nutrients) and endpoints (e.g., type-specific HPV persistence, viral load, and development of SIL).
In this study investigators propose to examine the relationship between biological indicators of oxidants in blood serum and cervical carcinoma. The specific aims include: 1) to determine the relative risk for type-specific persistent HPV infection events associated with circulating concentrations of oxidant load biomarkers (malondialdehyde and anti-5-hydroxymethyl-2'-deoxyuridine autoantibodies-anti-HMdU aAb); 2) to determine the relative risk for SIL associated with biomarkers of oxidant load; and 3) assess the relationship between circulating biomarkers of oxidant load and HPV viral load. The study focuses on early events in the development of cervical cancer-HPV infection, persistence, and progression to SIL.
