Frederick X. Gibbons

Rick Gibbons is a professor at Iowa State University who conducts research on the social psychology of health behavior, including adolescent health risk behaviors, such as drinking and drug use, and health promotion, such as exercise and UV protection. Much of his research focuses on social psychological factors related to health disparity (e.g., the impact of perceived racial discrimination on substance use and abuse; see Gibbons et al., 2003, A social reaction model of adolescent health risk, Social Psychological Foundations of Health and Illness). His research is currently funded by grants from NIDA (to study drug-relevant cognitions), NCI (to study UV protection), and CDC and NIMH (to study the health behavior of African Americans).
