ASA24 Supports Research Across the Cancer Continuum

Since its launch in 2009, the Automated Self-Administered 24-hour (ASA24) Dietary Assessment Tool, a freely available research resource supported by DCCPS and other NIH institutes, offices, and centers, has been used by researchers to collect dietary data for epidemiologic, intervention, behavioral, or clinical research across the cancer control continuum. ASA24 is also used by researchers to collect dietary data for studies of overweight and obesity and many other health-related outcomes. New in 2024, the ASA24 output files can be linked with the Nova classification system to determine the levels of ultra processed food consumption in their studies.

As of early 2025, more than 1 million dietary assessments have been collected, and more than 1,000 peer-reviewed scientific publications have used ASA24 to collect dietary data. Examples of cancer-related publications from 2024 that used ASA24 for diet assessment include

  • a case-control study of the association between the gut microbiota and colorectal cancer
  • sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with low muscle mass and composition in people treated with (chemo) radiotherapy for lung cancer
  • feasibility of an education-focused Mediterranean diet intervention among patients with myeloproliferative neoplasm pathogenesis
