Event Series
Obesity and Cancer
In the United States, racial and ethnic minoritized groups disproportionately suffer from the burden of cancer, obesity, and related metabolic consequences. This webinar focused on increasing our understanding of the role of structural racism in the intersection of obesity and cancer disparities within racially and ethnically diverse populations.
The webinar goals were to: 1) provide an overview of the complex and interacting multilevel determinants of cancer (e.g., biological, behavioral, segregation/neighborhood disadvantage and disinvestment) using a cell to society framework; 2) enhance knowledge about the role of structural racism in the intersections between obesity, obesity-related cancer risk, and related pathophysiological and biological mechanisms among individuals from underserved, racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds; and 3) discuss potential obesity and cancer prevention strategies focused on multilevel factors. The webinar provided various perspectives and potential scientific areas of future research.
This webinar is part of the NCI Obesity & Cancer Webinar Series, which aims to foster cross-disciplinary research on obesity that can help prevent, treat, and/or control cancer. This webinar is sponsored by the NCI Obesity & Cancer Health Disparities Working Group.
